Wayne T. Newton served as a trustee of Kirkwood (IA) Community College for 30 years and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees nearly twenty. He has also held all of the executive offices of ACCT including the Presidency in 1984-85. He has been a delegate to and President of the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. He was a member of the Future Commission that authored the Building Communities book that has been so widely read by the college community.
Newton has also served as an Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Retreat Facilitator for nearly 200 community colleges across the country. Newton is familiar with and trained to provide assistance to boards in the Policy Governance model for board leadership. Newton is an alumnus of Kirkwood Community College and was selected to receive the first “Outstanding Alumnus” award of the college. He is the recipient of the ACCT M. Dale Ensign Award, the AACC Special Trustee Award and the IACCT Outstanding Award.
Newton has served on the boards of many other organizations, and as chairman or president of several, including Grace Lutheran Church and Lutheran Laymen’s League, FHA Loan Review Committee, Benton County Farm Bureau, and Benton Community School District. He has also served as a director of the Benton County State Bank. Newton is a semi retired farmer/co-op manager. He is a commodity broker dealing in farm commodities. His peers recognized him in 1965 as the “Outstanding Young Farmer of the Cedar Rapids Area”.
